Relieve plugged ducts and soothe sore breasts naturally

A warm Epsom salt soak using a silicone breast pump (like a Haakaa) is a gentle and effective home remedy for:

• Plugged ducts
• Engorgement
• Tender, inflamed areas of the breast

This technique combines warmth, suction, and the drawing properties of Epsom salt to help release blockages and ease discomfort.

What You’ll Need
• A silicone breast pump (Haakaa or similar)
• Epsom salts (plain, unscented — not bath salts or ones with added oils)
• Warm water (not hot — comfortably warm to touch)
• A comfortable, quiet place to sit

How to Do It

1. Add 1–2 teaspoons of Epsom salts to your clean silicone pump.
2. Fill with warm water — about halfway. Ensure it’s not too hot for your skin.
3. Gently suction the pump onto your breast, with the nipple fully submerged in the
warm salt water.
4. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, allowing the combination of warmth, suction, and salt to draw out any milk plugs.
5. You can repeat this 1–2 times daily as needed.

Earthside Tips

• Do this in a comfortable, upright position — over a towel if you're worried about drips.
• Follow up with gentle massage toward the nipple and try nursing or pumping afterward to fully drain the breast.
• Be cautious not to overuse — repeated aggressive suction can cause soreness or inflammation.
• If the area is red, hot, or you’re feeling unwell, check in with your care provider to rule out mastitis.
